Package Handler (Warehouse like) (Whitby)

Overview

Responsible for the physical loading, unloading and/or sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and placing, in a safe and efficient manner. Package Handlers (PHs) may be assigned to or rotate through various areas and positions such as Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, Scan Weigh and Key (SWAK), Quality Assurance (QA), Facer, Switcher, etc.Core Responsibilities

Utilize hand-to-surface methods for all package handling. Load and unload packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts and load gratings. Lift, carry, push and pull packages continuously for approximate shift durations of 3‑5 hours, with the potential of working one or more shifts each day.Determine the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers and memorizing information, then sort packages accordingly. Perform other duties as assigned. Specialized Assignments

Package Handler Trainer

– Trains other PHs on unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, smalls handling, SWAK, and non‑conveyable package handling techniques; provides feedback on proper techniques; reinforces all dock safety standards; demonstrates necessary processes and procedures; updates managers on conditions during sorting; assists in implementing new procedures; regularly loads/unloads, palletizes, lifts, carries, pushes and pulls packages while training.Package Handler– Air

– Performs a multi‑step package inspection process to ensure “Air Restricted” packages are not loaded into an air container; scans each package in the airlift consolidation area; inspects for Hazardous Materials or ORM‑D designation; loads packages into unit load device as appropriate; completes “Notification of Restricted Packages Return to Shipper” in SCMS for air‑restricted packages; regularly loads/unloads, lifts, carries, pushes and pulls packages.Minimum Education

None required. Minimum Experience

No experience required. Preferred: Six (6) months of experience as a PH with Federal Express Corporation (FEC) for PH Trainer and PH– Air assignments. Knowledge, Skills&Abilities

Understand and follow instruction regarding work duties and safety methods. Discern numbers and information to sort packages correctly. Use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand‑held scanners, chutes and unloading devices. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; work well in a fast‑paced team environment.PHs operating switching equipment must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file. PH Trainer: Ability to train multiple peer PHs simultaneously. PH – Air: Must satisfactorily complete and maintain FEC’s Airlift Consolidation Gateway Training as well as government‑regulated and required Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) training, with yearly recertification.Job Conditions

Work in hot and cold temperatures. Work in an environment with loud noise. Lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds. Travel not required. Pay Range
