Summary The Fibre Optic Technician is responsible for the installation, configuration, testing, and maintenance of fibre optic and network infrastructure serving residential, business, and community environments within Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. This role supports reliable and secure connectivity by completing field installations, performing troubleshooting, and providing technical support to customers and internal departments.
Responsibilities
Install fibre optic cable infrastructure in residential and business environments
Install networking services and last-mile connections
Configure and troubleshoot switches, routers, Wi‑Fi, LANs, and network equipment
Work with and occasionally supervise subcontractors during installation activities
Install cable pathway systems including trays, racks, cabinets, and enclosures
Perform fibre line locates and confirm work areas prior to installation
Program newly installed services and provide end‑user training
Use fibre testing and diagnostic equipment, including visible light sources and light meters
Interpret work orders, drawings, schematics, and technical specifications
Label cables and document installations using network tracking software and as‑built diagrams
Provide technical support and troubleshooting services as required
Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards and PPE requirements
Participate in on‑call rotations and after‑hours maintenance windows
Support other Public Works or technical projects as assigned
Qualifications
Computer Networking training and/or related coursework
Electronic Technician/Technology Certificate (asset)
Previous telecommunications field experience (strong asset)
Manufacturer or telecom industry certifications (asset)
Knowledge of fibre optic cabling systems and installation standards
Understanding of computer networking fundamentals and operating systems
Knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure and industry best practices
Strong commitment to ongoing professional development
Valid Class“G” Ontario Driver’s License with clean driving abstract
Clear Police Records Check
