Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating specialized machinery to support scrap processing and demolition activities both onsite and at external locations. This role requires advanced shear experience, the ability to work independently in dynamic environments, and a strong commitment to safety, equipment care, and efficient material handling.

Machines Used: Liebherr Material Handler LH60, Front End Loader, and Volvo 380 Excavator. We also use the Volvo 380 Bale Breaker and Volvo 380 Shear attachments.

Job Responsibilities

Loads and unload different types of heavy material using material handling/bale breaker/ loader/shear

Report all equipment damage and operate machinery safely at all times

Inspect all the mobile equipment before operation and fill out the inspection sheets.

Be able to effectively perform tasks independently.

Moves levers to grade and sort metal with material handler, bale breaker, or loader.

Adheres to pile management procedures.

Performs routine maintenance such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning.

Completes inspection report prior to using equipment.

Reports all job hazards as well and stops job immediately if hazards are present.

Inspects material for hazardous waste and grades different types of scrap metals.

Offsite demolition of oversized material, when required (within Lower Mainland)

Other relevant duties may be assigned.

Job Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

5+ years’ experience operating heavy equipment, such as shears, loaders, excavators, cranes, etc.

Well-articulated and assertive.

Able to understand limitations of equipment being used.

Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to supervisors, maintenance personnel and other employees of the organization.

Able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Able to work both morning and/or afternoon shifts out of Mitchell Island, Richmond.

Must be physically able to climb up and down safely from the material handlers.

Able to work overtime shifts or weekend shifts, when required.

All candidates must be able to satisfactorily pass a drug and alcohol test, criminal record check, and fitness test.

Compensation This is a unionized role, starting at $34.19/hour and increasing to $35.12/hour on July 1, 2026.
