Home Support Worker (Private Home), Kingston

Goal&Purpose The position involves providing some weekend support and respite starting with 12 hour shifts for a non-verbal 48-year-old smart and gentle man with autism in his own home. He is very intelligent, kind, sensitive and aware of people’s emotions. He is always a pleasure to be around and loves to be involved in the community. His behaviours are minimal and not aggressive.

Duties

Drive and support him with volunteer work and various community activities (volunteering, swimming, library, coffee shops, hockey games, the park etc.)

Prepare and cook his meals

Light house duties

Assist in all of his personal hygiene care

Administering all medications and completing proper paperwork

Things that are important to him

He likes to participate and make his own decisions as he is capable

Making him feel important and getting him excited about things in his life

Encouraging him to participate in all activities and ADLs (activities of daily living)

Recognizing his intelligence and speaking to him like you would to anyone else and willing to learn his communication system

Looking for someone who is

Patient and flexible with his day to day activities and routines to meet his needs

Energetically optimistic and cheerful

Understanding and compassionate

Willing to build a good rapport with him

Experience working with people with special needs is necessary
