We are seeking an experienced individual to join the Iqaluit Fire Department as a Firefighter / Emergency Medical Responder. The role is open to all applicants and is part of the Firefighter Eligibility Pool. Candidates who are community-minded, skilled professionals, medically trained, and experienced with the latest fire suppression technologies and rescue techniques are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities Under the direction of the Chief Officers, you will report to the immediate supervisor and be responsible for fire/rescue response, pre-hospital emergency medical care, fire prevention, public education, fire inspection, and any other duties assigned. Responsibilities also include performing minor maintenance of apparatus, small equipment, building, and grounds, and call taking/dispatching of emergency and non‑emergency personnel.
Required Qualifications
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
Current CPR HCP
NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I
NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II
NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
Valid Class 3 Driver’s License
Air brake endorsement
Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status
Proof of Grade 12, equivalent or better
Driver’s Abstract reflecting no more than six points in the last three years
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (within last 6 months)
Ability to operate communications equipment
Preferred Qualifications
Post‑secondary education completion
Apprenticeship or trade certification
PCP or ACP certification
NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator (recommended)
Proven ability to work in a team environment
Volunteer work in the community
Demonstrated experience as a firefighter
Knowledge of City of Iqaluit– geography, location of streets/addresses, major buildings and hazards
Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment or commercial vehicles
Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, and portable equipment
Ability to operate communications equipment
Shift&Working Conditions This position works a 4‑day on / 4‑day off schedule with two day and two night shifts. Dependability and flexibility are required and may be subject to overtime. The position requires carrying a pager and the ability to respond to emergencies outside the normal shift schedule.

Additional Requirements All requirement certifications must be current at the time of application. Candidates must also submit a Criminal Record Check and an acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
Inuit Language and Community Engagement Work requirements and expectations include language proficiency in Inuktitut or French, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to perform under stressful and emergency situations. Community involvement and a commitment to serve the Iqaluit community are essential. Specific duties, responsibilities, and expectations for working within the unique environmental and cultural context of Iqaluit are detailed in the department’s standard operating procedures.
Additional Information The City of Iqaluit embraces the intent and spirit of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit; candidates must clearly identify their eligibility to receive consideration under this agreement.
