Job Overview
Store Associate– Summer Contract (9‑week position funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program). Reporting to the Associate Store Manager, the Store Associate provides excellent customer service and supports the daily operations of the Bissell Centre Thrift Shop. Eligibility: applicants must be between 15 and30 years old, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugees, and legally authorized to work in Canada.Responsibilities
Ambassadorship– model Bissell Centre values, communicate principles internally and externally, and foster a welcoming work environment. Show empathy and support individuals experiencing mental health, addictions, chronic illness, houselessness, poverty, and other complex challenges. Respond effectively to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and assist individuals with unique barriers.Customer Service– greet customers, assist them in finding items, answer questions, provide product information, and manage fitting rooms. Point of Sale – operate the cash register, handle cash and card transactions, process returns and exchanges, and maintain accurate transaction records. Merchandising&Inventory– keep the sales floor organized and visually appealing, restock shelves, handle damaged or unsellable items, and report low inventory. Donation Processing – sort, tag, and price incoming donations and ensure processed items are placed on the sales floor. Cleaning&Maintenance– keep the store clean, tidy, and safe for customers, staff, and volunteers. Customer Engagement – promote the thrift shop’s mission and programs, encourage participation in donation drives and events. Teamwork&Communication– collaborate with staff and volunteers, follow supervisor directions, share ideas, and contribute to the store atmosphere. Special Events&Promotions– assist in setting up and organizing special events, discounted days, and seasonal promotions. E‑Commerce – aid in online store product curation, photography, posting, order preparation, and photo‑room optimization. General&Administrative– adhere to all policies and procedures, report incidents, attend meetings, and perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Formal Education and Experience– high school diploma or equivalent; retail or customer‑service experience is beneficial but not required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – excellent interpersonal and customer‑focused attitude, teamwork skills, strong communication, basic math for cash handling, willingness to learn, andphysical stamina for standing, walking, and lifting moderate weight.Asset– familiarity with poverty and houselessness in Edmonton’s urban core, and familiarity with the not‑for‑profit sector or social enterprise operations. Physical Stamina – ability to stand, sit, move, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs, work in dusty or allergen conditions, handle temperature variations, evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, and holidays.Screening Requirements
Age 15‑30 years at the start of employment. Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or individual granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Legally authorized to work in Canada. Vulnerable Sector Record Check. Child Welfare and Intervention Record Check. Training Requirements
Conflict into Calm Training– must be completed during the first month of employment. Narcan/Naloxone Training. WHMIS 2015 Training. Other required training may be identified as required.
