Q-Block Computing is seeking an experienced and agile Financial Analyst to join our dynamic team in Edmonton. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to support the financial operations of a cutting-edge quantum technology company while working in a fast-paced startup environment. The successful candidate will bring expertise in R&D accounting, government contracting, and grant management to help navigate the complex financial landscape of emerging quantum technologies and defense sector procurement.
Job Summary As Financial Analyst for R&D Operations, you will provide critical financial support across multiple revenue streams including government contracts, research grants, and commercial product sales. Your work will encompass cost tracking and allocation for complex R&D projects, financial compliance for defense sector contracts, grant management and reporting, and financial forecasting in a rapidly evolving quantum technology company. This role bridges accounting and operational finance, requiring both technical accuracy and strategic insight into the unique financial challenges of an innovative defense technology company.
Responsibilities
Manage cost tracking and allocation across multiple R&D projects funded by government contracts, grants, and internal investments
Prepare financial reports and reconciliations for government contracts ensuring compliance with federal accounting requirements and contract terms
Monitor grant budgets and prepare quarterly/annual reporting for research funding agencies
Track and forecast project costs across quantum photonics R&D, manufacturing development, and system integration activities
Support bid and proposal development by providing accurate cost estimates and financial projections for new government contracts
Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and expense reimbursement
Assist with financial analysis for capital equipment purchases and infrastructure investments
Prepare cash flow forecasts and budget variance analyses to support business planning
Liaise with external auditors on financial compliance matters
Document financial processes and maintain organized records for contract and grant audits
Support senior finance team with month-end and year-end closing procedures
Contribute to financial planning for facility expansion and scaling operations
Qualifications
3+ years of accounting or financial analysis experience in R&D-intensive organizations, preferably technology, research-intensive university, or advanced manufacturing sectors
Professional accounting designation (CPA, CGA, or equivalent) preferred but not required
Demonstrated experience managing government contracts, grants, or defense sector accounting
Strong proficiency with accounting software and financial management systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar ERP systems)
Solid understanding of R&D accounting principles, cost allocation methodologies, and project-based accounting
Knowledge of Canadian government contracting requirements and compliance standards
Familiarity with grant reporting and financial stewardship requirements for research funding
Technical Requirements
Advanced proficiency in Excel including data analysis, financial modeling, and pivot tables
Competency with accounting software and basic database management
Understanding of government contract cost structures (labor allocation, overhead rates, capital equipment depreciation)
Ability to work with multiple funding sources and cost centers simultaneously
Knowledge of Canadian tax and payroll requirements
Preferred Assets
Experience with government defense or aerospace contracts
Familiarity with federal research programs
Experience with startup or high-growth company financial operations
Knowledge of government grant management
Exposure to manufacturing or hardware-intensive R&D environments
