Description
Position: Architect / Intern / Designer (Intermediate)
Company: Rootstock Architecture
Location: Edmonton and Area (Applicants MUST be a permanent resident or Canadian citizen and MUST reside in Alberta)
Join a purpose-driven, female-led architecture studio designing smart, community-focused housing and entertainment spaces.
Rootstock is looking for a capable, well-rounded Designer who is organized, proactive, and comfortable working across both design and production in a client-facing environment, with the ability to take ownership of work and follow it through.
This role is suited to someone with industry experience who is confident supporting a Principal Architect across all phases of project delivery—design, documentation, coordination, and client interaction.
Full-time positions are available with structured or flexible work arrangements, including work-from-home days.
About Rootstock Rootstock Architecture Inc. is a growing architectural studio registered in Alberta and British Columbia. Our work focuses on multi-family and commercial/professional projects, with an emphasis on
thoughtful design, efficiency, and strong client relationships .
We offer a boutique studio environment with direct exposure to all aspects of practice—from early concept through to construction.
We believe in:
Collaborative project execution
Exposure to all phases of project delivery
Flexible working arrangements
Our team works closely together and maintains strong relationships with clients—many of whom return for repeat projects.
The Opportunity This is a highly involved role for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of deliverables, managing priorities, and working directly with clients and consultants.
You will work closely with the Principal Architect to support and help lead project delivery across multiple active files, with the opportunity for long-term growth within the firm.
This role is ideal for someone looking to step beyond a production role into a more integrated, leadership-track position within a growing studio.
This role requires someone who is equally comfortable at a high level and in the details—able to contribute to design direction while also stepping into production (including DP-level drawings) if needed.
This role suits someone who enjoys being involved, contributing ideas, and taking responsibility—not just executing tasks.
You will be involved in:
Design development and documentation
Client meetings and presentations
Bylaw and building code review
Internal process improvement and workflow development
Exploring and integrating AI and emerging tools into workflows
We’re Looking for Someone Who:
Has
5 + years of experience in an architectural practice
Is
organized, reliable, and proactive
Communicates clearly and is comfortable working with clients and consultants
Can confidently contribute across both design and production, including drawing packages when needed
Has experience with
residential and/or commercial projects
Understands
basic building systems and wood‑frame construction
Enjoys working in a
small, collaborative studio environment
Is interested in improving how we work, including exploring new tools and technologies
Is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen and resides in Alberta (applicants not meeting these criteria will not be considered).
Software Experience Experience with the following is beneficial:
Revit (required)
SketchUp (preferred)
Enscape or similar visualization tools
AutoCAD (basic working knowledge)
Other visualization or presentation tools
What We Offer
Flexible or structured work schedules
Work‑from‑home options
Mentorship from the Principal Architect
Exposure to all phases of practice
Opportunities for professional growth and leadership development
Opportunity to take on increasing responsibility and leadership
How to Apply If you’re excited by the idea of building smarter, better housing in a supportive, flexible studio — we’d love to hear from you.
Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
