Hemlock Utility Services provides water, wastewater, and hydroelectric services to the Hemlock Valley and Sasquatch Mountain Resort community. Operating in a remote mountain environment, the utility supports essential services that protect public health, infrastructure, and community growth.
The Opportunity We are seeking a skilled and reliable
Equipment Operator for a 5-month seasonal term position , with the potential to transition into a year-round role, supporting utility construction, maintenance, and emergency repair work.
This is a hands‑on role that combines equipment operation, underground utility work, and day‑to‑day utility maintenance activities. The successful candidate must be capable of working independently, operating equipment safely, supporting a small crew, taking ownership of their work, and adapting to a wide range of operational and field tasks in a remote mountain environment.
Key Responsibilities and Expectations
Operate heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, skid steers, and trucks
Perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, and grading for utility work
Support installation and repair of water, wastewater, conduit, and related underground infrastructure.
Work closely with pipe layers and utility staff to complete work efficiently
Confirm site conditions, clearances, and safety requirements prior to excavation
Maintain control of equipment and ensure work is completed accurately and safely
Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
Assist with general labour and utility work as required
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe worksite
Follow all safety procedures and operational requirements
Complete assigned work accurately and support day‑to‑day utility maintenance, emergency response, and operational activities as required.
Qualifications
Valid BC Driver’s License Class 5 or higher is considered an asset
Proven experience operating heavy equipment
Strong knowledge of excavation and trenching practices
Experience in underground utility work (water, sewer, or electrical) is an asset
Strong mechanical aptitude
Experience working around active underground utilities and live services is considered an asset
Ability to work safely in remote mountain environments and changing weather conditions
Experience operating excavators, loaders, skid steers, and compact equipment is considered an asset
Confined Space Entry certification is considered an asset
Working Conditions
Outdoor work in all weather conditions
Physically demanding work environment
Exposure to heavy equipment and construction sites
Participation in on‑call rotation for emergency response
